Metalabel
Collaboration Cookbook (Release 10)
Metalabel is a space for releasing, selling, and exhibiting creative work. Metalabel can be used to release creative work in all forms: physical media, digital work, experiential work, essays and ideas, provocations and invitations.
This cookbook is a living online resource containing recipes for collaborative projects. Included are a variety of initiatives and experiments that are all the result of people working together in creative partnership.
When our friends from Metalabel joined us for a second year back at FWB fest, they approached me to design and co-author a collaborative cookbook with a live co-creation session. Some of my favorite community projects I’ve done with FWB and throughout my career have started from jumping in a file or creating from scratch with a bunch of creative strangers.
Austin took up the responsibility of content editing & I took up responsibility of design, layout, workshop blueprint, and production. Together, we created a collaborative collaging & recipe writing workshop.
On Saturday, August 5th, 2023, 40 people gathered together in a computer lab at Idyllwild Arts High School for a collaborative zine making workshop co-hosted by Metalabel and Friends With Benefits. The results formed the basis of this online resource.
Workshop participants contributed to Collaboration Cookbook by either writing recipes of their own collaborative projects, or by creating collage-based artwork — resulting in over 20 contributions. This enthusiastic response led to the creation of an online archival site, allowing for participants around the web to join in.
This was my first published book of any kind, and somehow it made its way into my favorite bookstores in three different countries and the Brooklyn Museum.
